Ferric Sulphate
When you turn the tap on in your home and clean water comes out have you ever given a thought as to process involved that makes the water clean and drinkable in the first place? During the cleaning process of waste water, sewage treatment systems use a chemical compound called Ferric Sulphate to help increase the rate at which sedimentation occurs in the waste water. It therefore removes impurities in the water such as bacteria, metals and even arsenic. As Ferric Sulphate is highly corrosive it needs to be stored in specialist containers and should not be touched with the bare skin. Due to its corrosive nature tanks, pipes and containers that store or distribute the chemical in waste water treatment works need to be made from extremely resistant materials such as fibreglass. Even though Ferric Sulphate is a corrosive chemical it not a marine pollutant and this is why it used to clean water, reduce odour and corrode impurities. Other names for Ferric Sulphate include Ferobuff, green salts, Copperas, Slow fe and Combiron
